THE DELFONICS’ ‘UNSUNG’ STORY
Date:
Of all of the acclaimed (or sometimes, underrated) acts on Philly Groove Records, none seem to garner as much intrigue as The Delfonics. A trio from their label’s hometown of Philadelphia, the band had all of the makings of an act to be venerated through time, in the style of Motown’s Temptations or Philadelphia International’s O’Jays.
What seemingly set the group off course is a rift between brothers and lead singers William and Wilbert Hart, whose difficulties over the years have sparked enough interest to set the premise for this week’s episode of Unsung, a TV One documentary series that chronicles the careers of formerly high-profile R&B and soul music artists. The show will air just one night after Reservoir’s release of This Time, a brand new release of Delfonics’ songs, meant to symbolize a new era for the music that first drew fans to the group so many years before.
As anticipation builds for the episode, outlets like the Philadelphia Tribune are reaching out to the brothers, now the sole survivors of the original group, for additional insight.
