Reservoir writer 2 Chainz dropped his latest mixtape, Daniel Son; Necklace Don, late last week. In true Chainz fashion, the album delivers some real bangers. While Chainz is renowned for his versatility and diverse list of collaborators, this tape proves that the rapper is still TRU to himself. Below are 10 quintessential 2 Chainz-isms found in DS;ND:

1. An everlasting love of bling.

On the swag-track Kilo, 2 Chainz raps, “I just told myself, ‘Self, I need me a new bracelet.’” When Chainz wants to indulge himself, he does.

2. A playful take on things.

The mixtape is inspired by the 1984 film The Karate Kid, from which Chainz lifted the idea for album artwork, depicting himself as the Karate Kid in cartoon form. His MTV VMA nominated video for “Watch Out” also features an equally animated Chainz, complete with Jib Jab bobble heads. Not to mention the hilarious one-liners that the rapper has become known for like “I get high and I fly past, I don’t know nothing ’bout iChat/I work in this iPhone they need an app called iTrap.”

3. Literally flavorful rhymes.

It’s no surprise the Atlanta native is opening up a restaurant, Escobar, in his hometown later this year, as he drops rhymes about food on the regular. Some of our favorite food references from DS;ND include:

“Garlic butter with the yum yum.” from track #8, “You In Luv With Her”

“Ate a caesar salad I dropped carats in salad.” from track #9, “Blessing”

“I bought her noodles and sake. Favorite meal used to be chocolate.” from track #3, “Ghetto”

“I’ma get married at Benihana’s” – from track #4 “Ounces Back”

4. Devout loyalty to Gucci.

Earlier this year Chainz turned heads when he showed up at the BET Awards rocking a bedazzled Gucci denim jean jacket. He raps about his flawless taste on “Ounces back” saying “I like it then I buy it…Gucci be all on my flip flops”

4. A tight-knit crew.

Right beforeDaniel Son; Necklace Don dropped, Chainz posted a screenshot on Instagram of a conversation with Drake musing “When we dropping that joint?”. After a year full of 2 Chainz collabs with hip-hop heavyweights like Lil Wayne, Kanye West, DJ Khaled, Chance The Rapper, and Statik Selektah, it’s no surprise Drizzy wanted a piece, too.

5. Commitment to being one of a kind.

Rapping over an ominous beat on track #5, “Chirp”, Chainz goes in on people trying to steal his style. As he declared on his debut studio album Based on a T.R.U. Story, “I’m Different“, “Middle finger up to the competition.”

6. A generous spirit.

In track #9, “Blessing”, Chainz declares “If I know you, I’ma bless you.” In addition to having one of the biggest voices in the biz, Chainz also has one of the biggest hearts. He started the TRU Foundation, a local non-profit in Atlanta, that regularly gives back to the community. Proceeds from the sale of his merch line bought a family in need a home late last year, and fifteen-year-old tuba player, Joshua Williams, got the surprise of a lifetime when Chainz sponsored a trip for the budding classical musician to perform in NYC’s famed Carnegie Hall.

 

7. Second-to-none sound bites.

TheRapBoard.com has no fewer than seven 2 Chainz effects that replicate his famous audio clips, likely much to the rapper’s delight as he noted on Twitter that he did the mixtape’s kung fu-style sound effects all on his own.

8. Swag for days.

On the braggadocios track “Kilo”, he exclaims, “I ain’t into failure and I don’t even know what to tell you”. He equally airs his confidence on 2016’s “Watch Out”, stating “You getting mad, I’m getting rich.”

9. An ongoing love affair with Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

In Kanye West collaboration “Champions” Chainz admits, “I wear pajamas to Ruth’s Chris” and in DS; ND’s futuristic-trap track, “Ghetto”, he takes it a step further declaring, “Me and Ruth Chris, we got a relationship.” He even told a a fan during a recent Reddit AMA to visit the steakhouse and tell them 2 Chainz sent him.

10. Good ol’ Mary Jane.

In July’s acclaimed collaboration with Statik Selektah, “Smoke Break”, Chainz suggests “let’s take a smoke break” in the songs main hook. In “Chirp” he confesses “I usually smoke at work”, which might explain how he keeps on writing all these hits.
