Biography

When Sydney Australia-turned-LA-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Joel Taylor was born, everyone around him knew he was pre-destined to be an artist. After fine-tuning his craft in a musical family that included everything from his boogie-woogie piano playing grandfather, a founding member of Col Joy & The Joy Boys, one of Australia’s very first rock bands to learning how to play New Orleans stride from his mom, music was in his blood. Joel left Oz straight out of high school to follow his dream in Los Angeles where like his idol, Billy Joel, he plied his trade at local piano bars playing for the contents of a tip jar. In those years living in a rented room of noted French guitar maker James Trussart, Joel could come downstairs for his morning coffee to find the likes of Hall & Oats, Billy Gibbons  and Charlie Sexton sitting on the couch awaiting their new instrument, a true young artist’s dream that added color to his burgeoning musical narrative. Joel spent this time absorbing these moments as a working musician and perfecting his song-writing craft.

His first release, the double single Two Sides with his unique blend of American soul and soaring vocal style made his presence known as one of the new and exciting faces in the singer/songwriter world. “Two Sides”, a piano driven, energized, ballad and B-Side “What Good Is Love”, a heartbreaking, acoustic ballad set the stage for his follow up, “Give Myself Away”, where Joel revealed his more playful, pop side. He then took us to church with “Moment’s Notice”, a gospel hymn about rebirth inspired by his decision to move to the U.S. from Sydney, leaving a tense home that drives the story behind the song and it’s Lazarus connotations. Joel’s newest, “Little By Little” is a warm-hearted, feel good tune, stepped in natures beautiful imagery about finding a sense of belonging and planting your roots.

Joel has been spending time touring the U.S. playing clubs and colleges with additional dates to be announced shortly. He is also putting the final touches on his debut EP coming later this year and looking forward to performing and sharing his stories with new faces.
