JAZZTIMES PREMIERES JOEY ALEXANDER’S STRAYHORN TRIBUTE, ‘LUSH LIFE…A LIFETIME LATER
Date:
Jazztimes.com has premiered the new video Lush Life…A Lifetime Later (Celebrating Billy Strayhorn’s 100th Birthday) today featuring an interview and in-studio performance by jazz pianist prodigy Joey Alexander. In the Reservoir-produced video, Alexander pays tribute to one of his idols, Billy Strayhorn, by performing one of Strayhorn’s most celebrated pieces (and one of Alexander’s favorites), “Lush Life”. Strayhorn began composing “Lush Life” at 16 years old, not far from Alexander’s mere 11 years—another reason the pre-teen prodigy feels a deep connection to the song.
Alexander included “Lush Life” on his debut album, My Favorite Things, earlier this year, as he connected with the song’s message and complex composition. My Favorite Things debuted #1 on the iTunes Jazz Albums charts besting releases from jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga.
