DION RELEASES NEW STUDIO ALBUM ‘GIRL FRIENDS’
Date:
Today, rock icon Dion released his new studio album, Girl Friends, a project featuring 12 collaborations with powerhouse female artists. The album was preceded by three singles with Susan Tedeschi, Danielle Nicole, and Carlene Carter. Coinciding with today’s album release, Dion also debuted the music video for “Mama Said,” his collaboration with blues artist Shemekia Copeland, who said singing with Dion was a dream come true. Girl Friends also notably debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums chart.
When describing the album, Dion explained his desire to showcase “the feminine genius – the undeniable difference that’s in women and the difference that they make in the world.” He added, “I wanted the best music possible. So, I wrote up a batch of duets for me and my ‘girl friends,’ the women who inhabit my headphones — the women who make me turn up the volume when they drop into my radio. I invited them to join me, one by one, and here they are, wailing on the guitar and into the microphone. You’ll hear the feminine genius in every groove of this record, and you won’t forget any of it.”
No Depression praised Girl Friends as “another album on which Dion and his friends shine brightly, enjoy each other’s musical company, and lay down some sizzling tracks.” Blues Rock Review also lauded the “exceptional performances galore.”
Timed to International Women’s Day, Girl Friends precedes some additional exciting initiatives for Dion. Next month, he will be recognized by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University at its second annual American Music Honors event, and in 2025, The Wanderer, a musical based on his life, is expected to arrive on Broadway.
